President's Message

Heather Tamminga, CAE

We are heading into the time of year of festivities, feasts and family gatherings. It’s also the time of year that I’m reminded that my family still doesn’t understand my career choice. Association management doesn’t have the intrinsic understanding that nurse, teacher and police officer hold. (Those are my examples because these fine individuals are in my family.) For me, this is one of the reasons I belong to ISAE. I enjoy seeing my association family and having meaningful discussion with like-minded professionals throughout the year.

ISAE is holding several events in November and December, including the Annual ISAE Holiday Party hosted at the Iowa Motor Truck Association, December 17, 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. This is a complimentary event with plenty of hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. I hope to see many of you there.

I’d like to wish you a blessed holiday season, filled with family, friends, rest and renewal.

Assessing Your Talent Management Process
By: Gary Walljasper, Partner,Carlson Group

The Current State of Talent Management
When asked how important talent management is to their success, most organizations place this at the top of their priorities. The stark reality for many of these organizations, however, is alarming, when it comes to evaluating their talent management effectiveness. Common themes that surface include the following:

• Minimal or no processes are in place to guide the organization’s talent management approach
• No common language is in place to create consistency across the organization
• Zero governance exists to ensure accountability and action
• No metrics, data, or analysis work is gathered and used to help inform talent decisions

Moving from Succession Planning to Strategic Talent Management
Talent management is more than simply succession planning. It is a business strategy that focuses on people. In short, talent management is the way in which you recruit, hire, and develop people to have the right talent in the right roles doing the right work at the right time. And, regardless of the size of your association, proactive planning is a requirement for effective talent management. Here are five key actions to take when creating a talent management strategy:
